Robert Goodenough

Robert Goodenough is hardworking and focused. He learns everything he can about trees from his father. He is smart and thoughtful. Robert is also compassionate. When his mother gets very drunk at the annual camp meeting, Robert is the one who goes to find her in the morning. And it is Robert who tells Martha, whom everyone else thinks is weak, that she’s stronger than she thinks. Robert feels a sense of responsibility toward his family. He sees their integrity and shows them love, even when they’re difficult to love.

But when Robert’s parents kill each other and his mother tells him to run away, Robert does so immediately, leaving his siblings and vulnerable sister Martha behind. Perhaps it has all become too much for Robert. Once he is free of the burden of his family, Robert discovers that he enjoys a traveler’s life. He loves being unencumbered by other people and responsibilities. He can feel himself being pulled by the mystery and romance of the West. Later, when he begins to find his way in California and works as a seed collector for William Lobb, Robert becomes even more protective of his freedom and independence. When Robert senses that Molly might want something from him, he shies away. Later, when Molly has Robert’s child, he continues to feel unsure about the role he might want Molly to play in his life. In the end, he takes a chance on Molly, but only because she is willing to accompany him on the long sea voyage.
